🌞 Light
Most tropical houseplants prefer bright, indirect light. Avoid placing plants in direct harsh sunlight, which can scorch leaves. North or east-facing windows are ideal for low-light varieties, while south or west-facing windows work well for light-loving plants.
💧 Watering
Overwatering is the #1 cause of houseplant death! Always check the soil before watering — stick your finger about an inch into the soil. If it feels dry, it's time to water. If it's still moist, wait a few more days. Always use pots with drainage holes.
💦 Humidity
Tropical plants love humidity! Aim for 50–70% humidity if possible. You can boost humidity by:
- Grouping plants together
- Using a humidifier nearby
- Placing a tray of water and pebbles under the pot
- Misting leaves occasionally
🌡️ Temperature
Most tropical houseplants thrive between 65°F–85°F (18°C–29°C). Keep them away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and heating units.
🪴 Soil & Potting
Use a well-draining potting mix. Adding perlite or orchid bark helps improve drainage and aeration. Repot your plants every 1–2 years or when roots start growing out of the drainage holes.
🌱 Fertilizing
Feed your plants during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–4 weeks. Reduce or stop fertilizing in fall and winter when growth slows.
🐛 Common Problems
- Yellow leaves: Usually overwatering or lack of nutrients
- Brown leaf tips: Low humidity or inconsistent watering
- Drooping leaves: Underwatering or root rot from overwatering
- Pests: Check regularly for spider mites, fungus gnats, and mealybugs. Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
